Cleaning and re seasoning the outer skillet only

Hi, I have a skillet which was handed down to me by my parents. The inside bottom and sides are black, smooth and beautiful. However, the outside has built up crud on it. What is the best way to clean up the outside of the pan only?

Try spraying the outside only with oven cleaner and covering it. Let it sit for a day or so and see if this works. You may need to repeat the process. Good luck,and good cooking.
