Good Trade ???

So, Friday night I got together with a guy I met at an auction last month. We had talked about things we like to buy, and when I told him about my passion for cast iron, he said he had two #14 Griswolds and that he uses the cast iron that he has. I asked "do you actually use two #14s?". He laughed and said i guess not. I asked if he would sale me one, and he told me he would rather trade me for something else he might like. After some texting pictures back and forth, he took an interest in an old cast/tin radiator I had restored this past spring. We met Friday and traded, even up, my ERIEZ radiator for his LBL #14 Griswold. I did't have much money tied up in the radiator, just time, and he didn't have much money in the skillet, so we both walked away happy. The skillet does have a noticeable bow that we discussed before the trade, but I'm still excited to have it. What do you guys think, would you rather have the skillet or the radiator ?

Tough call on that, but I probably would've kept the radiator especially if it was in working condition. I know I would never use a #14 and I consider myself to be much more of a user than a collector. In any case, you both walked away happy so that's the most important thing.

Holy moly! You did an amazing job restoring that radiator! Whatever happened to the craftsmen who made functional items that were also works of art?!

If you are happy with the trade, that's all that matters. You're the one who put all the work in the radiator. That hard work is your currency to spend any way you want!

That's kind of how I looked at it. I had my fun with the radiator, and had no plans to actually use it, so it was time to move on to another project. When the weather permits this spring, I'll set up a couple of etanks again and this will probably be one of the first pieces I clean. I'm not sure if I'll ever use the 14 either, but that isn't my primary goal with cast iron. It's a hobby, a passion, something I enjoy doing with my time. although, I am slowly learning to cook in and care for some of my skillets, lol.

I would rather have both of them! You got what you wanted, he got what he wanted. Sounds like a good deal for both of you.

The radiator wasn't my first choice to trade. He was looking for a Griswold mailbox and I had 2. Neither was exactly what he wanted, so I offered cash along with the one he liked the most. He said no to that, but then ended up buying it from me after the trade. I am pleased with how everything worked out. Like you said, I got what I wanted since I really like hard-to-find cast iron skillets. All part of the "fun of the hunt", lol.
