Default Griswold Sun Dial Project

bought this on ebay... I'm not sure how many coats of paint it had on it, but I counted at least 4 or 5 different colors. lye tank removed most of it, and rather quickly.

any ideas how these looked when sold new? I assume they weren't bare iron? at one point in stripping paint I noticed gold accents on the ridge of the center piece and a couple of other spots... that would be pretty striking.. a nice solid color then gold on the angled center piece and maybe on the numerals...and the text on the bottom... I'm open to suggestions.

They came in enameled, chrome, and bare iron, with a wooden base. See BB pg. 211.

I assumed the 'wooden base' was just something someone whipped up to display it indoors... I wouldn't think that would be very practical outdoors (like where the sun is). I bet a chrome version would be pretty stunning sitting out in the sun.

D Madden,

I too like the sundial.... I vote for bare iron (seasoned ?). Classic. On a pedestal would be perfect. Nice buy.
