Age of Erie 1786 No 8 Griddle

Griswold didn't use badges affixed to patterns for numbering. This would be someones's copy using an Erie griddle as/as basis for a pattern. This pan could therefore have been made any time after the original pan used for the pattern was made. A maker's mark, as in the maker of the pattern, would be incised. Molder's marks were raised because the marking tool was impressed into the sand mold cavity surface resulting in a raised mark on the casting. Griswold did not use molder's marks.

Hello, I have a Erie just like this without the badge. It has the "No" in front of the 9 and c/n 739. Dated at 1905. Just wondering if these are sought after since only made for a year or so. In great shape no spin or wobble, Thanks for any info.

The BB shows a handle griddle with Erie in quotes, a p/n and the size number preceded by "No." as being ca. 1885- 1905. Collectors place the start of p/ns on Erie skillets as 1890s-1905, so perhaps the BB authors meant as early as 1885 without the p/n. In either case one could assume the variation was made longer than just a year or so.

That page covers only Erie skillets. Some characteristics can be extrapolated to other shapes, but not typically.
