How to Separate Wood Handles on Waffle Iron

I have a new to me Wagner waffle iron with wood handles on the way.
I'm pretty sure I'll need to take off the handles before lye or e-tank.
What's the best way to get them apart, is kroil ok for the wood?
Any helpful ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.
Yes, they just unscrewed. Already in the lye tank, man, is that stuff effective.
Next stop e tank, Once there's room.
I'm thinking linseed oil to refinish the handles?
Any thoughts?

Most wood handles' original finish was black. Whether that's black paint or the same japanning used on the bases is hard to tell.
