Teapot

I bought this old teapot from ebay last week.

The temperature is pretty high here now, so after one night in the lye all the paint came off.

I left it sitting for a few hours with vinegar and water in it and then I submerged it in a bucket of vinegar and water.

Most of the crud is gone off the inside but I'm going to let it sit full a little longer because I want it to be bare metal inside.

I'm thinking I will just season it like I would any other CI. It's just for display.

Nice one Bonnie....I'm thinking you need to send it to me since Kentucky is my home. I don't have any pieces with Ky. on them even though I have seen a few on eBay but prices too high.
Assume you will season it and not paint??? Either way it will look good.

Thanks Michael, yes I am going to season not paint. I like the look of iron. I will have to wait for a cool evening to season. It's too hot to turn on the oven.
I just bought a G. F. Filley I am going to restore also. If that one turns out nice I might consider parting with Kentucky. :p

The Filly looks a bit cleaner inside than most teapots its age. Handle a bit worn but for that kind of money it's a good buy.
Good luck with it.
BTW....I didn't get to go to Ky. for my family reunion as I planned. Got stupid and pressure washed the top of my foot...got infected and had to bail on the road trip. Was looking forward to antiquing on my way up and back but now it's eBay and local stores. And yes I know about the heat. Been in upper 90's here in Houston and I too have put off seasoning at the moment plus one of my A/C units decided to crap out on me just after my foot injury so when it rains it pours as they say.

Sorry to hear about your foot. I hope it mends quickly. I had to rebuild my evap cooler last month, I spent 200$ on parts but I'm sure glad I made that investment now. I sprayed the teapot with canola oil and it's baking the sun. I have a lot more work to do on the inside but I think it looks pretty sharp on the outside.

Bonnie, what a pretty old kettle! Is the date on it 1863 or 1868? I can't quite make it out. I guess the weather out there is good for something--seasoning cast iron and baking cookies in the sunlight! Thanks for sharing, and I hope you let us see the Filley kettle when it has "baked" a bit. Very nice!

Sharon, it says 1863. There seems to be quite a few of these style kettles with that patent date on them but having different foundry names.

Bonnie, I should have mentioned in my earlier response that these kettles look a lot like my Sweeney's. I guess they show nineteenth century progress in iron utensils.

You're soooooo lucky. Just want to know where that well is located that you toss those coins in and make all those wishes?
Nice pot Bonnie

It looks like the Filley tea pot was on ebay quite a few times before it sold. I think the seller dropped the price 3 times. I filled it with vinegar and water and boiled it a while. I thought it would stink but it actually smelled like tea.

Michael...I live in the desert. I don't tell anyone where my favorite wells are. :chuckle:

Assume this is the G.F. Filley pot? I know that Wrought Iron Range Co. out of St. Louis had a grey porcelain pot and since Filley was also out of St. Louis it is likely that it may very well be porcelain.
How to remove....? Have no idea. Maybe just live with it.

Yes Michael it's the G.F. Filley. I think it was pretty common practice way back when to only line the inside of the vessel. This old post of Rob's shows a skillet with the inside enameled. They must have set up the cookware manufacture pretty close to the bathtub manufacture.

PS..here is a link to one of my favorite swimming holes. I don't toss coins in it but it does help wishes come true.

Great video...Love the music also. We got a little falls back where I was born in Ky. Doug will probably yell at me for doing this but here's a short video of my wishing well. Good thing is there's a lot of antique shops in this area but bad thing is I don't make it back that way very often.
Enjoy....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdlSsCs7e-U
