Does anyone have a handy tip for getting the black iron residue off the ends of one's fingers when you're done scrubbing?
I'm having an issue doing so.
I realize gloves would work, but I find them awkward, and can't 'feel' how I'm doing with the cleaning.

I'll usually start out wearing nitrile gloves (the kind for doing medical exams). Once I get the bulk of the cleaning done, and need to feel what I'm doing for the last little bit I'll take one glove off. The ungloved hand still gets dirty, but not nearly as much as when I don't wear gloves at all.
 
I also use nitrile gloves, they may tear slightly when scrubbing off residue with steel wool but your hands stay very clean. I keep boxes of them at the ready.
 
The nitrile gloves worked like a charm, and even made it through cleaning not one, but two, skillets without tearing.
