Severe Pitting... How Did It Happen?

I found this skillet sitting outside a dumpster a couple years ago, and finally got around to it. The rust was severe. After taking it out of the ETank and scrubbing all the crud away, this is what I got...

My question is, how is it that the majority of the iron is severely pitted, and yet the Griswold logo itself is perfectly preserved? I ended up finishing the restoration by seasoning it so it could at least be used, but I'm assuming how collectible the no.4 large logo irons are is very much reduced considering it's appearance. Still nice.

Thanks for any ideas you may have!

From what Ive learned over the years, is cast iron that is exposed to water for a long time can cause pitting, or sulpher from a wood burner....not sure really but nice find!
