Re: Hot Cooking

I have a Wapak 10 that is relatively thin. I have gotten it up to 5/6 on my gas stove a couple of times to sear a steak, but I took my time getting there. Started on low and let it be for 5 minutes...

Re: Changing Lye Solution

Thank you both for the clarification...that helps. I have yet to set up a lye tank, but it's in the back of my mind and I like the details.

Re: Changing Lye Solution

I'm a bit late to this thread (been away, catching up). Anyway, does the lye itself evaporate? I would assume that water would evaporate and need to be replaced over time, but the lye concentration...

Re: Lye bath question

Honestly, I'm not concerned about it...I just put that disclaimer in so I didn't kick off some big debate about how I was doing it wrong :-D The ventilation is for my e-tank set up, and lye will end...

Re: Lye bath question

I was looking at new barrel specs online, and 30 gallon seems like it'll be about the right size...I think. Not too big, but big enough. This will be set up in my basement (I have ventilation), so...

Re: Lye bath question

Cool...I was looking online and saw some new ones available, and saw the locking clamp ring on the lids. So, at least I know what to look for when I start searching. I'm thinking of setting up a...

Re: Lye bath question

Jeffrey, where do you get those barrels? I've seen those before and used them once or twice, but I never sourced them myself. Are they readily available at stores? Or would I need to look for an...

Re: Healthier alternative to Crisco?

Either you get into the science of seasoning and prove your point, or realize you have to pick your battles, and this one may not be worth picking :)

Re: Is this stained?

That deep black color most often comes with use and time. Most of my freshly seasoned pieces are some degree of either gray or brown...but they darken up with use.

Re: Cook Top Cleaning

Somewhat related, here's something to be careful of from my personal experience. Our gas stove started clicking all the time like it was trying to light, even when no gas was flowing. We had a...

Re: Chesapeake Va Intro

Welcome! As for new vs. old, I may be in the minority, but I still think Lodge puts out a good product. Don't get me wrong, I'm a collector and user and I do like vintage iron better. I also enjoy...

Re: Question re: e-tank

I would think the worst that would happen would be a little rust...which the tank will remove once you fire it up again.

Re: New E-tank ups and downs

Good news! It's alive! I'm going to keep an eye on it for a few days, but so far, so good.

Jeffrey, I wanted an exhaust fan over this, but a low end bath fan that at least wouldn't sound like a...

Re: New E-tank ups and downs

Oh, don't worry...I'm laughing about it too. Nothing else to be done at this point. I was mad for about 5 minutes, then I got over it...this will be a good story, whether the phone survives or not.

New E-tank ups and downs

So, I've been working here and there for awhile on upgrading my e-tank. I got a bigger container, built a small exhaust fan, and moved the whole thing into my basement. I'm pretty happy to have it...

Re: Beware of YouTube Chefs

This is true of everything on youtube...whatever it is you're good at, you can find tons of bad examples of it on youtube.

Re: Dutch Babies

Generally speaking, my wife and I have been adding a bit of bourbon to batters lately, and it's quite delicious, assuming you like bourbon. Pancakes, french toast, waffles...about a Tbsp or so of...

Re: Please help identify unmarked #8

Minor warping will cut the value of the pan as far as collecting is concerned, but it doesn't have much effect on the usefulness of the pan in my experience. I've got a couple spinners that cook and...

Re: CI Bread Pans?

I've been using a made in Taiwan DO for my bread baking...it's the best size I have for it. I am guessing that it's approximately the size of a #7. I have a #6 Wagner in my to be cleaned pile that...

Re: Ham & Turkey Club Sandwich

I'm going to have to experiment. I will say this...as this has been bouncing around in the back of my head, I'm reminded of a lunch I had last week. Local restaurant added a Cranberry Turkey Club...

Re: etank battery charger

I have a 2/6/12Amp charger, and I also do almost all cleaning at 2Amp. I have tried the higher settings for cleaning sessions, and the only difference I noticed was that it hummed louder. YMMV.

Re: Ham & Turkey Club Sandwich

I always eat PB&J jelly side up...always. I don't have a reason, other than that's the way I do it. Am I missing something here? Is my life about the change?

Re: Cause Grandma used lard

I do both...dry with a towel, and then heat for a couple minutes on low on the stove top just to be sure any residual water evaporates.

Re: Your thoughts on blasting????

To this point, electrolysis and Lye bath do not remove any iron whatsoever, so they would have also uncovered these faint markings.

To your general question about blasting, I think you already...

Re: Your top 4 "users"

1) #10 Wapak
2) #8 Griswold LSL
3) Smaller Asian DO (soon to be replaced by a Wagner #6 that's in my to be cleaned pile)
4) #8 Wagner DO

#4 was hard because I use my little #3 skillet fairly...
