Re: GRISWOLD #4 Skillets I've Found

Nice. Never seen the wood handle version. I let a few slide out in the early 1990's in a trade for some spider skillets. I had some with heat rings.
I have learned a lot.:shootself:

Re: Any Ideas?

Do you have the rimmed lid? The "D" shaped legs place this example in the older phase of gate marked spiders. 1880's to 1920's.

Yes. Tried and broke. Used a heating torch and a shrink heating pattern.

Re: Today's Goodwill Finds

Our local Goodwill stores cherry pick the cast iron donations. All we see is chinese cookie pans and chinese fajita pans from the Christmas gift stuff.

Re: DO ID

I wonder if they have records across the pond for early cast iron ware? Tax or export records.

Re: DO ID

They are called spider skillets in the southeast states. So many foundries made them there is no way to label who made what unless the lid is marked with a name of series of initials. This example is...

Re: Please Help Identify This Cast Iron Pot

If that is a matching set, I find it odd that the lid has the older style "meet in the middle" handle, but no gatemark.

Re: Camp Oven ID Help

Raised top and bottom with the "slim" lettering late 1950's into into early 1970's. Then block lettering on the top and a thinner lid design, without bottom marking. You have a smoother casting DO...

Re: Wagner Dutch Oven Question

Yep, it was worth three dollars.
I have another Bummer for you. Good luck finding a matching rimmed lid. In this case I would look for a lid that fit. Cast iron or glass, to use on a stove top.

Re: Guess I'm a Collector Now

It a handled dutch oven. Made to cook with coals under and on top. Anything a modern oven can do can be done with that. It has the older "D" shaped feet and what appears to be a casters mark on the...

Re: Guess I'm a Collector Now

Can you post a picture or the bottom of the spider skillet so I can see the feet. I have seen several "slip marks" on recast lid molds. Yours has a slip mark, but a small one compared to the examples...

Re: Smaller Skillets?

I love my 3's. I make a big batch of corn bread. Spoon out the boys into a plastic bowl and add sugar. Preheat and cook. Spoon out the wife's. A little sugar and cracked black pepper. Then mine,...

Re: IRONSPOON Seasoning Method

Nothing beats lard. Fancy oils, synthetic compounds, compared to good ole animal fat.

Re: Cooking Fish in C.I. Leave a Fish Aftertaste?

I have cooked many pounds of catfish in some of my deep dutch ovens over propane. The result is a good seasoning inside the pot. A messy carbon seasoning outside. Deep fried catfish is great for both...

Re: Rescue

What's up with the red color. Paint, flash rust, or extreme heat damage. The spider skillet is the best one in that pile.

Re: My First Hammered Piece

I have two hammered lids. Needing the pots. Also have the later version that are not hammered.
If I had to pick a single combo to use these would top the list.

Re: Help to Id Bean Pot?

The lid handle and the "pig ears" are consistent with late 1800's and early 1900's casting patterns. I assume the bottom of the pot and underside of the lid have gate marks.

Re: How Do You Collect?

I bought my first spider skillet at Lacon Trade Day, a small flea market in North Alabama in 1986. Paid five dollars for the N0. 12 with matching lid. I have focused on gate marked spiders and pig...

Re: Just Curious About This Pot. Ideas?

That picture is thirteen years old. Has the pot been cleaned or neglected? The pitting minor for a pot that old. A good scrubbing and several coats of lard over an open fire would seal into the...
