Re: Do Not Do
Some people believe that the lead can be eliminated with proper cleaning. Lye will eventually dissolve lead completely. A lead test is necessary to confirm if cleaning has been effective.

Re: Possible to restore or beyond repair?
I've heard that people use some type of solvent to clean these up, it dissolves the grease and crud but not the enamel, but I don't know what kind of solvent. I will probably do some experimenting...

Re: Small CI pot
A solution of lye and hydrogen peroxide will dissolve lead. Jewelers and scrapers use it to remove lead solder from precious metals.

Re: What is this skillet? Is it Asian?
I found this same pan, and a 9 inch of the same design. They also had orange paint on the handle. I showed them on several cast iron sites and no one could tell me anything about them. It is my...

Re: Your user size needs
In my day to day cooking I find that I use the Nos. 2, 4, 8, and the 10 inch chef skillet the most. The Nos. 9 and 10 skillets and the No. 6 griddle get used weekly, and the Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7, 11 and...

Re: porcelain and electrolysis
I clean those lids with electrolysis, which cleans the the bare iron parts. Use Bar Keepers Friend on the enamel. I've also been known to put them in lye for about 5 minutes if they have sticky...

Re: Purchase or Not?
Those are sweet pans! "arc" logo Lodge is attributed to be from 1910 thru 1930's. I have a couple of those raised number skillets in my everyday user collection. The casting is as smooth as anything...

Re: A tale of Necessity's daughter.
Did you heat the Vollrath lid before putting it in there? I've "cooked" nachos entirely with the heat held by a pre-heated skillet and a lid before.

Re: E-tank question
From my experience, running 10 amps at 12 volts your average pan with a little crusty seasoning and light rust will come out clean in about an hour or two. Your heavily rusted/pitted customers will...

Re: I'm in a slump ...
This is why most folks don't use power tools on cast iron cookware. It does something to the surface and will never season the same. It's possible to intentionally rust the affected areas and get the...

That malic acid is the same stuff that gives apples their tartness. It's good for digestion but as I recently discovered apple crisp left in a skillet overnight actually caused good, hard, well...

Re: Ready to make some pizza
Old gate marked round griddles are great for pizza! I've got a 14 inch, it's pitted and warped but that makes no difference for pizza. 14, 15, and 16 inch versions are easy to grab off of ebay and...

Re: What's the going rate on 1,000 skillets?
Thanks for the reference, the lot I'm pursuing is a lot more reasonably priced. Understandably it would be a gamble, but I'm having fun toying with the idea. I'll see what they have to say about my...

What's the going rate on 1,000 skillets?
I've been in communication with someone who has "somewhere between 600-650 Griswolds and 300-350 Wagners, no names, etc. skillets. There is a 13 and a couple 14's in the griswold lot."
I was just...

Re: Wagner Ware Double Stack Roaster?
I'm having trouble imagining how you would cook in this thing. What would go on that level 2 plate? something dry, as any liquid would drain to the lower level, but then it would only be warmed to...

Looks like bronze to me. I'd try putting it in a lye bath for a couple of hours, it may clean the crevices, and will brighten up the rest of it.

Re: Changing Lye Solution
I cannot think of a good reason to change out the solution. Save yourself some time and little money, use it til the skillets won't sink anymore. :)
