Re: Lobster, yumm....

Took a fancy boat trip around the inland waterways in Maine about two years ago. The captain's special meal was fresh lobster cooked on an open fire on a rocky beach. He bought a bushel in the...

Re: Martha White

I have tried all three brands, and Krusteaz would be dead last in my votes. I use Jiffy all the time. Sometimes wish I had a scratch recipe that was as good.

Re: care for a camping grill

I like the just let it go thought, but I just can't accept the disposable society tenets. If it can be fixed it should! So after googling the replacement cost - 26$, I broke out my dremel tool,...

care for a camping grill

I have a camp grill, the kind with the fold away legs intended to go over a wood fire. I'm having trouble keeping the cooking surface clean and free of rust. It is a steel (thick) mesh - (see...

Re: Fish in CI

I would pre-heat the CI in the oven before you put in the fish for crispier results.

Re: Deep Dish #15 Pizza

Interesting - how were you able to un-mold the pie from the pan without breakage. I have never succeeded in that trick without a un-natural level of oil in the pan before the dough goes in. Hats off....

Re: Tonights Dinner, Spatchcock Chicken with Roasted Taters

Oh, I guess I'm guilty of carelessly using words from my cultural heritage. You see I would normally say - the 4 kids mushed into the back seat so we could get to the game on time.
I was trying to...

Re: Tonights Dinner, Spatchcock Chicken with Roasted Taters

I don 't find it saves that much time on cooking a chicken, and the breast meat gets all mushed together. But I do it all the time for the big turkeys. Much better to get the even heat all around....

Re: Lye paste

Well, I have never worked directly with lye. But chemically speaking... you would be working with concentrations that would be very high - so any and every precaution you can take should be taken....

Re: Christmas Ham

Aw shucks ( can you hear the southern twang). Seen that same ham cooked dozens of times by my mammy. In the old days they could get a drum called a lard can, bring the ham to a boil over a fire in...

Christmas Ham

Didn't some one ask what to do with the old CI tubs? - Salt cured ham - its the only thing I have big enough to take a 17lb ham.

Re: Back Yard Stones...

Very pretty, and well constructed for bottom air draw, but practical? I would get a hernia moving stones that size for a clean out.

Re: Tub

I have one just like it. Perfect for salt cured country hams (that are still made today, and don't come in a can!). But also used as a bath tub for babies, foot soaker. Stayed on the stove and kept a...

Re: Electrolysis: Distance btw anode/cathode, current, and more

From a purely scientific point of view:
Resistance is proportional to the distance between the electrodes.
Resistance is inversely proportional to the surface area of the electrodes
Resistance...

Re: Cast iron pot

Looks like a babbitt pot to me. Melted tin alloy for bearings, engines machine parts.

Re: french le creuset

What to do with them? Why use them of course! At least the dutch oven and the sauce pan. I think the fry pan is useless, much better to have black iron for that. The DO is good for many recipes that...

Re: Pletts

Well, do you flip them like pancakes? Or just let them cook on the bottoms?
I'm not really into lingonberry, but I bet some nutella would be a good topping.

Re: Bread

I find it hard to predict when I need a fresh loaf of bread, and find the no-knead, refrigerate method better. I actually use a recipe from a cookbook, but this one is pretty much the same:...

OK, so I'm not totally sure what it is, but after spending the weekend knocking off the rust and re-seasoning I started looking for what this could be. ...
