Self Cleaning Oven
Is there any reason not to use a self-cleaning oven to burn old residue off of cast iron ?

Re: Self Cleaning Oven
You can warp your cast iron since self cleaning ovens clean/heat at different temperatures.

Re: Self Cleaning Oven
Older, thinner vintage (and more valuable) pans are more at risk, and the SCO should be avoided altogether on them.

Re: Self Cleaning Oven
also... a pretty good chance of damaging your oven (when things fail its usually when they are pushed to an extreme... there are stories of ovens locking the doors for the self clean cycle and not ever unlocking them)... also, most ovens recommend that you remove the racks to avoid damage and discoloration... if there are no racks where are you going to put the pans?

COST.
Lye $20.00 and 5 gallons of water will clean 100 pieces I pay enough to the electric co as it is to season pieces. Conserve when we can. |

I want the crust and any paint to just slide off in less time as possible. $20.00 in lye will last a LONG time. $20.00 in electric bill will not get you far. The less $ spent cleaning the more I spend purchasing, works for me. |
Re: Self Cleaning Oven
I imagine it would smoke and stink a wee bit.

Re: Self Cleaning Oven
I do not like to Self Clean a Oven.
Seems like they always have a problem after cleaning. Lots of articles on why never to Self Clean a Oven just before Thanksgiving. I have a local guy for Lye so I save the shipping cost and his prices are very good. https://www.thelyeguy.com/index.php |
